 Happy Birthday to Yuu
« Thread Started on Jul 15, 2009, 3:03pm »

Joseph tugged on the collar of his leather jacket gently, his expression one of distinct unease. He was standing on the edge of a cliff on the north outskirts of town, fidgeting like a frightened rabbit. It was well into th evening and the sky had long turned black, the stars twinkling merrily around a small sliver of light that was the waxing moon.

Joseph shifted his weight from foot to foot, looking around nervously. What was he doing? Was he out of his mind? Sure, he gone over the top a few times before on a number of things, but this took the triple-decker chocolate-coated cream-filled cake, hands down.

It was September 22nd, and it was for this reason that Joseph was so very nervous. Normally, dates and times do not have this effect on him, but this day was unique for one very simple, very important reason: it was Yuushou's birthday. However, once again this fact would not have quite such an effect on Joseph during normal circumstances. However, these were not normal circumstances. Joseph had a surprise planned for Yuushou, and it was making him more nervous than anything ever had in his life.

Joseph though back to earlier that day, when he had gone to Yuushou's house at a time when he was sure that she was away. He had placed a small package wrapped in brown paper on her doorstep and left. When she opened it she would fine a text on basic psychology by Sigmund Freud along with a hand written note.

Happy Birthday, Yuu! I thought this might come in handy for your classes. No self respecting psycology teacher should be without at least one text by Freud. You probably already have this one, but it was all I could find. If not, I hope you put it to good use. Have a great day.

P.S. I've got another surprise for you. Meet me on that cliff at the north end of town at midnight.

Now here he stood, twitching like mad as he waited to see if she would show. He wiped a layer of sweat from his forehead as he continued to look for her. He'd faced the legions of hell without so much as a flinch, but the prospect of what he was about to do made him shiver like a leaf in a high wind.

What was he doing? No one did it like this, no one. A bouquet of flowers, a box of choclates maybe, but not like this. This only happened in movies. If he screwed this up he'd look like the biggest idiot since the inventor of the DVD Rewinder, and he'd probably lose what relationship he already had with Yuushou.

More to distract himself from just waiting than anything else he set about checking to make sure everything was set properly. Everything checked out, of course, just the way it had over a hundred times before. The wiring was all in place and functioning perfectly. The track was also just the way he had set it. The only thing missing was Yuushou.

Resigned to a restless wait, Joseph returned to his previous position and stared up at the moon. He really was a fool.

Yuushou had been surprised, to say the least, to see a small wrapped package on her doorstep when she returned from her class in the evening. Her day had passed simply, and the thought of what day it was never entered her head during the course of her simple daily schedule.

The dark haired young woman had walked up to the doorstep with the initial impression that the mailman had delivered the intriguing package to the wrong place. When she reached the package, she slipped her key into the lock and opened her door before stooping to pick it up. The package seemed harmless enough, and had no address. Clearly it hadn't been the postman, then. Yuushou weighed it casually in her hands, her best guess being that it was a book by its weight and size. Nonetheless, this additional assumption gave her no help in determining for what reason the package might have come into her possession.

Yuushou carried the mysterious package into the dining room. It was a nice-sized room furnished with a long, rectangular table made of sturdy, dark wood and matching chairs with dark blue covers. She pulled out one of the chairs and seated herself at the table. Yuushou gently peeled apart the brown paper, lifting a handwritten note from the top of what, at casual glance, confirmed her suspicions that the paper concealed a book.

Happy Birthday, Yuu! I thought this might come in handy for your classes. No self respecting psycology teacher should be without at least one text by Freud. You probably already have this one, but it was all I could find. If not, I hope you put it to good use. Have a great day.

When Yuushou finished reading the note, she was smiling widely, her first impression being how nice it was that Joseph had gone out of his way to send her something, for it was clear by the nickname at the title that it could be no other. Her second impression was to realize that it was indeed her 17th birthday, despite the fact she had all but forgotten it. Yuushou was next intrigued to look down and find a fine bound book on the studies of Freud in the package, of whose theories she had read general explanations, but she had not yet been privileged enough to study in detail or own a book entailing his work.

A lock of Yuushou’s dark hair fell in front of her shoulders as she leaned forward to look at the book on the table, opening the cover reverently with one hand, then trailing her forefinger down the center of the page as she scanned the table of contents. The crisp pages rustled softly as she flipped through the text, catching brief snatches of text until she finally closed the book in satisfaction.

Yuushou stood, placing the book under one arm while supporting its spine in her hand as she re-read the note, smiling faintly at his friendly writing. She shook it slightly as she entered her small room, surprised as it unfolded further to reveal a small section of the note that she had previously missed. She placed the book gently on the shelf of her bookcase as she read it over.

P.S. I've got another surprise for you. Meet me on that cliff at the north end of town at midnight.

The young woman found herself at a loss for what to think as she casually read the entire note again, taking care to be sure she hadn’t read it incorrectly. Meet him at midnight at the end of town? The female Quincy pondered with bewilderment. She glanced at the clock on hanging from the wall. It was around 9:00 p.m., so it would be some time before he would expect her. It wasn’t that Yuushou wasn’t looking forward to the said surprise of his, the matter lie in the fact she was currently most interested in seeing him and being able to thank him for his thoughtful gift.

Usually, Yuushou did not spend her evenings working, and she went to bed fairly early. What with her constant teaching schedule, her daily training and practices, and the unpredictable appearances of hollows at all unearthly hours of the night besides, she would take what sleep she could get early, if only to allow for the unavoidable incidents that would disrupt her sleep late. Midnight was the perfect time to avoid company and it was also the darkest hour of the evening, as she knew well, so Yuushou was quite interested in what her friend could have possibly planned.

Yuushou fell asleep for the next two hours, setting an alarm to wake her at 11:00 so as to make sure she wasn’t late. At 11:30 p.m., she left for the cliff on the north side of the town, dressed nicely in a clean, white long-sleeved collared shirt and dark pants, with her hair pulled back in its normal braids to the back of her head. Yuushou reached the beginnings of the cliff only two minutes before midnight. She caught sight of Joseph ahead and she made her way toward him, calling his name once in greeting.

Joseph turned sharply at the sound of his name, and saw Yuushou walking towards him. His discomfort increased noticeably at this occurrence, as though it was an unexpected pitfall and not the actual intended result.

"Oh, uh. Hi, Yuushou. You got the note, I see. It's, uh, good. To see you, I mean..." He sort of trailed away pathetically into nothing, his insides squirming with embarrassment. He was blathering like an idiot, for God's sake! Why couldn't he just put a few words together and have them come out sounding half-way intelligent.

He sighed hopelessly and looked up at the moon. This was going to be a disaster. He just knew it. He should just give up right now while he still had some sort of face left to save.

And yet...he did not move, but instead remained rooted to the spot. If he walked away now, so much time an effort would be wasted. And would he ever get another chance like this again? If he walked now, would he be able to forgive himself for it? He inhaled slowly and released his breath in a long sigh.

"Sorry Yuushou," he said. "I must sound like an idiot. I just a bit...okay, a lot nervous. I'm going to do something I've never done before, and I'm afraid of what will happen when I do." He paused a long time, and then continued.

"Yuushou, since the day I met you I've been meaning to ask you a question. For the longest time I've held that question in. I intend to fix that tonight. Yuushou, please tell me..."

Without looking away from the moon, Joseph slowly moved his foot an inch or so to the left and pressed down on a small concealed button. The button was a trigger connected by buried wires to a sound system concealed in the nearby trees. The sound system was wired to a special track that had been meticulously wiped clean of all lyrics, but otherwise left intact. Needless to say, the setup of all this had taken Joseph the better part of five months to prepare and get just right.

Softly, the distinct sound of a guitar wafted as if from nowhere, playing a slow, gentle tune. For a moment, time seemed to stand still as the ballad continued to play, then Joseph gently cleared his throat and began.

"Would you dance, if I asked you to dance?"

Joseph continued to look up at the moon, his expression inscrutable.

"Would you run and never look back?"

Slowly, he lowered his gaze to Yuushou, his expression soft and vaguely longing.

"Would you cry if you saw me crying?"

Slowly, he raised one hand to her, a gentle invitation to accept him, to embrace him, and to return the feelings he had nurtured for her all this time.

"And would you save my soul tonight?"

When she saw Joseph turn abruptly, Yuushou was a little alarmed that she had come too early, and that she should have come exactly at twelve, when she saw him become visibly more disturbed.

"Oh, uh. Hi, Yuushou. You got the note, I see. It's, uh, good. To see you, I mean..." Yuushou watched him with an expression that was perhaps a little indifferent before frowning ever so slightly.

"Are you feeling unwell, Joseph?" Yuushou looked at him with visible concern. As she watched, she noticed the sleeve of her shirt shiver slightly, and it continued to do so every so often. Is he trembling? She thought with worry as she looked at his face.

Suddenly, he sighed, looking into the evening sky. Yuushou did not remark as she watched him, still a bit concerned. Clearly there was something wrong, but she was sure he would speak when he could steady himself. A couple silent moments passed before her took a deep breath, releasing it all at once before he spoke.

"Sorry Yuushou, I must sound like an idiot. I just a bit...okay, a lot nervous. I'm going to do something I've never done before, and I'm afraid of what will happen when I do." Yuushou appeared to be waiting peacefully, but inwardly she was bewildered at what he was saying. Her eyes betrayed her confusion, but she remained silent just the same. The young woman could sense that it was something that he would have to decide for himself. A long, unbroken silence stretched on before he finally continued.

He seemed significantly steadier in his words as he began speaking. "Yuushou, since the day I met you I've been meaning to ask you a question. For the longest time I've held that question in. I intend to fix that tonight. Yuushou, please tell me..." Yuushou found herself completely at a loss as to what to think. It almost sounded as if he were proposing- but certainly they were friends, such a prospect had never entered her mind before.

The moon glinted off of Joseph's skin as he looked up at the glowing sphere set in the ebony expanse of the sky. The entire scene was tranquil and gentle, enveloped within the comfortable darkness of the night. Then, Yuushou's ears caught the soft, gentle melody of a guitar playing. For a few moments, it softly drifted through the area as if from nowhere, a distinct but unidentifiable song that she had never heard.

Joseph cleared his throat and he began singing. His voice carried to her through the blanket of night, causing her to widen her eyes at the lyrics. "Would you dance, if I asked you to dance?"
He did not change his position, and he continued to look to the sky.

"Would you run and never look back?" Her expression softened from surprise as she watched her closest friend, his own gaze meeting hers.

"Would you cry if you saw me crying?" Yuushou watched as he lifted his hand in what could be nothing but an unmistakable invitation to accept him. As she broke eye contact for a moment, looking down at the grass of the ground and she found her memory besiege her with images from the past like a flash show that lasted less than an instant:

His genial, genuinely friendly voice she first heard on the banks of that small sparkling stream; the sturdy but swift build that shielded her from an enormous hollow as a dark splatter of blood drops fell from his newly impaled back; the gentle flow of his voice as they pleasantly joked as they moved about the town; his falling form as the last strands of his crimson ransotengai dropped his wounded body onto the sands of Hueco Mundo.

Yuushou stepped forward with her eyes cast down, then cast her eyes up to look into his. On her face was the tenderest smile she had ever given, her eyes accepting his invitation silently as her eyes sparkled slightly in the light. Her fingers lightly graced his palm as she rested her hand in his at the end of his last phrase.

For a moment, Yuushou seemed not to react. Then, as he offered his hand, she averted her eyes, looking at the grass. He faltered slightly. He had just known this would happen. Of course it was too much. This was absurd.

And then she looked back at him, her face positively glowing with a tender, delighted smile. Hardly daring to believe that he was not in fact dreaming, Joseph watched as she slowly placed her hand in his, and felt an electric charge run straight through his arms as he felt her palm on his, gentle as a whisper.

Instantly all doubt melted away. Joseph curled his fingers around hers, squeezing her hand gently. He no longer knew any doubt. How could he ever have? Emboldened, he continued on, his voice sounding surer and stronger than before.

"Would you tremble if I touched your lips?"

As he reached forward with his free hand and brushed a lock of Yuushou's hair aside, his fingers traily gently down her cheek, he came very close to doing just that.

"Would you laugh?"

He smiled gently, his eyes doing the laughing for him.

Oh, please tell me this.

"Now would you die for the one you loved?"

His free hand pulled away from her face and trailed down her arm, gently taking hold of her free hand.

Hold me in your arms tonight.

Gently, he tugged at her arms, inviting her to join him in a dance. It wasn't anything fancy, just a gentle revolving under the moonlight. To Joseph, however, it seemed the most wonderful dance he had ever had.

"I can be your hero, baby."

He smiled at her, his face positively radiant with delight.

"I can kiss away the pain."

He brought his hand to her cheek and gently stroked it once.

"I will stand by your forever."

As they continued to move under the moonlight, he gently squeezed her hands in reassurance, his eyes affirming the promise he had just made.

"You can take my breath away."

Time seemed to have slowed as his hand gently closed around her own, warm and reassuring to the cool touch of her fingers. Yuushou felt herself entranced as the warmth spread through her hand, wrapping her own within the heat of his.

Her amethyst eyes, darker in the night, never left his as he continued in a clear, assured voice, her smile only becoming slightly more subdued as she felt the gentle movement of his fingers across her skin. "Would you tremble if I touched your lips?" His free hand moved her hair aside, and the light brush of his fingers slowly moving down the soft skin of her cheek left a light tingling in their wake.

"Would you laugh?" His eyes were bright with happiness as he smiled before the next stanza, and Yuushou’s smile returned fully, her head tilting slightly as she looked at him endearingly. “Oh, please tell me this.” She had never heard this song, but she was already quite sure that no conceivable version or singer would touch her heart like his voice did right now.

"Now would you die for the one you loved?"Yuushou carefully accepted his hand, a brief remembrance entering her mind of the times he had saved her with the words of the song. She then allowed him to lead her into a light dance, its simplicity in style left unnoticed- it was made perfect by being a sincere expression of his feelings. "Hold me in your arms tonight." Yuushou gazed at him, still inwardly astonished that this was all happening so fast- she had never entertained the idea of being with him, but when it came down to it, the fact was that she would never have chosen anyone else.

"I can be your hero, baby." He was smiling, the very epitome of delight. There was no smile that could cause her such equal delight as the glowing warmth he radiated.

"I can kiss away the pain." He released her hand for a moment, then lightly stroked the flesh of her cheek before clasping her hovering hand once more. His words were gentle and steady, accented by the delight in his eyes, but underneath there was an undeniable resolve. "I will stand by your forever."

It seemed almost as if in response to her perception that he pressed her hands encouragingly, his eyes reassuring any unacknowledged doubt in her mind as they continued revolving under the light of the moon. A small part of her tightened in resolution, though her eyes only showed joy as he continued.

"You can take my breath away." Yuushou’s eyes visibly flickered in surprise at the words, then she smiled. In the next instant she leaned forward, pausing slightly before softly placing her lips on his cheek in a swift, fluid movement. The contact was brief, but did not end until she had very lightly pressed her lips against his skin lovingly, before she slowly pulled away, watching his eyes with her own smiling ones.
